Rainey Street Substation

Project Description

C•DA provided full architectural services for an all-new Substation located in the Downtown Austin. Due to its close proximity to residential towers, C•DA worked with a public relations team and AE in a series of public meetings combined with an internet-based opinion distribution and gathering process. C•DA Initially presented three Design Schemes. The project team moved forward with design and construction on with the desired scheme based on the public input.

The Substation is located adjacent to IH35 and is designed around the use of custom high-tech gas insulated equipment that is very large and requires an extra long truck access and turning radius for delivery to the site. The site is fully fenced with 10’ high steel panels hosting an undulating translucent fin design. The equipment will be housed in a building with a gantry crane and a basement vault for connecting to the underside of the equipment. The building is seen as a taller continuation of the fencing on the two public facing elevations. The undulating design required C•DA to create a customized script using Dynamo to translate the light and dark hues of an image to the parameters of a custom-made adaptive fin within Revit. A separate script in Dynamo was created in order to create 2D shop drawings of each custom-profiled fin to be provided to a fabricator for laser cutting the final design. C•DA has provided base 3d models that are professionally rendered for public presentation purposes throughout the design process.
