Union Missionary Baptist Church

Project Description

Full architectural services for Historic Union Missionary Baptist Church built in 1883 on property gifted to use a place to worship to the slaves and employees from their Owner, Captain William Perry.  CARTER•DESIGN ASSOCIATES guided the client through the historic process starting with a Historic Structures Report, public meetings and graphic support for fund raising, grant applications, and hazardous materials testing.  After extensive field investigation and measuring, historic restoration documents were undertaken via computer modeling.  The documents included a separate transverse addition designed to sit behind and with a slightly lower roof than the church., which required the removal of a non-contributing 1950’s addition.  The new addition provided an office, toilets and breakroom. The roof connecting the existing church to the separate addition creating a covered area the could remain open or be closed with fencing gates and provided covered space around the existing brick baptismal that was discovered during archeological excavation and restored.

Full Restoration and Construction Documents were completed. Much of the original wood wall and floor structure was salvaged and restored, but some deteriorated wood was supplemented with new. Original interior beaded board walls and ceiling, wood flooring, and altar area platform and railing were retained and restored.  Several types of siding were found, and through analysis of historic photographs the original siding was removed, restored, reinstalled, and supplemented to match over new insulation and air/water barriers. The Church’s non-historic materials were removed or abated, new wood windows installed in the original openings and a new roof structure, deck and roofing.  The bell tower, damaged during a storm, was restored via written and verbal descriptions as no photographic evidence has been found.  All new MEP systems were inserted with the units located in the attic area.
