Juanita Craft House

Project Description

As consultant to the prime, CARTER•DESIGN ASSOCIATES served as interior restoration architects including field investigation, preliminary design through construction documents with limited construction administration service for the restoration of the Jaunita Craft home in Dallas.  Jaunita Craft was a civil rights leader, advocate and mentor of children and a state politician.  Her house owned by the City of Dallas was severely damage by a water pipe break.  The city determined they would undertake the full restoration and as part of the work convert it into a museum. CARTER•DESIGN ASSOCIATES coordinated the restoration with specialty needs of the exhibit designers.

The house, built constructed in circa 1925, was a typical low-cost plan for the modest neighborhood.  It had many changes including additional rooms over the years.   The original ship lap was covered in gypsum board prior to 1950.  As part of the project the wood floors, doors, hardware, wood trim were restored.  Window restoration was coordinated with the exterior prime Architect.  Water damage was repaired and new fire protection system installed.  The existing bathroom was redesigned to accommodate a modern ADA compliant toilet room.  Paint colors were coordinated with exhibit. The project received a Preservation Dallas Achievement Award.
