Onion Creek Stagecoach Park
Project Description
CARTER•DESIGN ASSOCIATES was retained to survey the Existing conditions of The Onion Creek Post Office and Stagecoach House (McElroy Severn House) pursuant to a Texas Historical Commission Grant to the city of Buda, Texas. The historic structures report and preservation plan contained a brief history of the property, existing conditions and a preliminary archeological report.
Existing conditions noted property deterioration and provided a scope of restoration construction required as well as suggested plan for re-use. The report forms the basis of an integrated preservation and management plan for the cultural resource. Although located on the Stagecoach Park site, the project is separate from the park project and must meet the Secretary of Interior Preservation Standards.
The buildings are listed on National Register and the site and building are State Archeological Landmarks. All work required both Section 106 and State Archeological review. Phase I involved the complete structural stabilization to preventing further damage to the building. A new roof and foundation, as well as remedial masonry work was done as part of this phase. Archeological shovel testing, structural stabilization, selective demolition, and weatherization were completed in 2007. Phase 2 included the full exterior and interior restoration of the property as offices, visitors’ center and gateway to the city’s Stagecoach Park.
