Full architectural services for the programming, planning and design of a new 30,000 square foot museum and a 6,000 square foot addition to an existing 10,000 square foot library. The site is part of a campus that also has a school and neighborhood park. As part of the project programming phase, CARTER•DESIGN ASSOCIATES recommended a series of plazas and landscaped open areas as a way of providing a unified campus setting for the buildings. The resulting walkways and plaza allow the existing Historic Carver Museum, also located on the site, to be the center piece of the resulting cultural campus. The site has significant topographical challenges and required multiple ramps, sloping sidewalks and other accommodations to provide accessibility to the three buildings that create the complex.
The Library addition houses expanded reading rooms, areas for specific library programs and community meeting spaces. The new concrete pier and beam foundation and steel structure were clad with integrally colored Portland cement plaster to complement the existing brick . Renovations included new electrical service, a new mechanical system, new lighting, and all new interior finishes. The renovated library is 16,000 square feet. Due to the size of the addition, it required access from several natural slope grades. Both interior ramps and exterior sloping sidewalks provide this access.
